    What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims around the world as a time of fasting, prayer, and reflection.

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical pleasures from sunrise to sunset (yes, not even water!). This period of fasting is seen as a way to physically and spiritually purify oneself, and to demonstrate solidarity with those who are less fortunate. Muslims around the world welcome Ramadan in their unique ways.

In addition to fasting, Muslims also engage in additional prayer and may also read or listen to the entire Quran during the month. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate the holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fast.

    When is Ramadan 2023?

This year Ramadan is most likely to fall on Tuesday the 21st March or Wednesday the 22nd March.

The exact date of Ramadan in 2023 has not yet been determined, as it is based on the Islamic lunar calendar so look out for announcements from your local masjid!

    What is laylatul Qadr?

The odd nights of the last ten days are also given special significance as muslims search for laylatul Qadr - the night of power. Worshiping on this night alone is said to be equivalent to worshiping for a 1000 months.

This year it is estimated that the dates are as follows:

21st night of Ramadan : Monday 10th or Tuesday 11th April

23rd night of Ramadan : Wednesday 12th or Thursday 13rd April

25th night of Ramadan : Friday 14th or Saturday 15th April

27th night of Ramadan : Sunday 16th or Monday 17th April

29th night of Ramadan : Tuesday 18 or Wednesday 19th April

    When is Eid 2023?

Eid day will be celebrated after Ramadan ends and is dependent on 29 or 30 fasts. For anyone booking holidays from work it is helpful to know that this year Eid falls on either Thursday the 20th, Friday the 21st or Saturday the 22nd April.

This year Ramadan coincides with the Easter holidays making fasting easier for students.  Although this will vary, students should be free on day 11 to day 26th of Ramadan (inclusive of weekends)
