When it comes to the purest form of love on earth, nothing compares to the love of our parents. They’re one of the greatest gifts Allah has blessed us with. They adore us without expecting anything in return.
It is impossible for us to fully reciprocate the love we are given by our parents. The sacrifices they make to bring us up and the hardships they bear to fulfil our dreams are out of this world. One of the best ways to show gratitude to our parents is by making dua for them.
In this article, we’ll look at the six best Islamic duas for fathers that you can make for their health, happiness, and forgiveness. And if you want to show your love and appreciation for your mother, be sure to read these beautiful duas for mothers.
The Importance of the Father in Islam
We know mothers are given a high rank in Islam, but have you ever wondered what place our fathers hold? While your Mother is the one under whose feet Jannah (paradise) is found, the father is called the door to paradise. Abu Darda’ heard the Prophet (PBUH) say this:
‘The father is the middle door of Paradise (i.e. the best way to Paradise), so it is up to you whether you take advantage of it or not.’
(Sunan Ibn Majah, 3663)
Now, you can imagine how honoured we are to have such a relationship in our lives, where every day we can draw closer to Allah and increase our chances of entering Jannah (paradise) simply by being kind and considerate to our fathers. Each of our parents is equally important and plays a big role in our lives. However, we sometimes take our fathers for granted. We forget to realise how much effort they put in daily to see that one smile on our faces.
That’s why we should make sure to include our fathers in our prayers each day and show them love and appreciation for the sacrifices they make for us. Another way to show this love is by giving them thoughtful Islamic gifts. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for your father, look no further! Riwaya has a beautiful collection to choose from! The Best Islamic Duas For Fathers
Here are some of the best duas for your dad that you can recite for him:
1. Dua for Allah’s Mercy upon Your Father
In Surah Al-Isra, Allah commands us to worship Him alone and to be dutiful to our parents. Allah instructs us to be humble in our actions toward them. By asking for Allah’s mercy upon our fathers, we show our love and sincerity to them as children. The following supplication is from the Quran and can be recited to ask Allah to be merciful to our fathers.
Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira.
‘My Lord! Be merciful to them as they raised me when I was young.’
(Surah Al-Isra, verse 24)
2. Dua for Your Father’s Forgiveness and Guidance
Prophet Nuh (AS) spent 950 years calling his people to abandon idol worship and embrace the Oneness of Allah Almighty. This dua was made by him after a long and challenging mission to guide his people to the right path.
In this supplication, he asked Allah to forgive him, his believing parents, and any believer who entered his house, along with all believing men and women. We can also recite this dua for the forgiveness of our Muslim fathers.
Rabbighfir lee wa liwaalidayya wa liman dakhala baiti mu’minanw wa lilmu’mineena walmu’minaat
‘My Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and whoever enters my house in faith and (all) believing men and women.’
(Surah Nuh, verse 28)
3. The Prayer of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) for Fathers
There is another dua for our fathers and mothers that we recite mostly in our Salah (as-Sunnah). It’s the prayer of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) that we usually recite right before finishing Salah with Salam. The following is the last part of this supplication:
رَبَّنَا ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلْحِسَابُ
Rabbana ighfir li wa liwalidayya wa lil-mu'mineena yawma yaqoomu al-hisaab.
‘Our Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day when the judgement will come to pass.’
(Surah Ibrahim, verse 41)
More background behind this Dua: Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) included his father who was a mushrik (disbeliever), in this prayer because he made a promise to pray to Allah for his forgiveness. But when he came to realise his father was an enemy of Allah, he absolved himself by praying for his forgiveness. This was mentioned in verse 114 of Surah At-Taubah.
It shows how important they are in Islam, as they’re mentioned in many duas from the Quran.
4. Dua for Father’s Happiness
Prophet Sulaiman (AS) said this dua after hearing an ant warn the other ants to move so that Sulaiman (AS) and his army would not accidentally step on them. He smiled, amused at her words and prayed,
Rabbi awzi'ni an ashkura ni'mataka allati an'amta 'alayya wa 'ala walidayya wa an a'mala salihan tardahu wa aslih li fi dhurriyyati inni tubtu ilayka wa inni mina al-muslimeen.
‘My Lord! Inspire me to (always) be thankful for Your favours which You blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please You. And instil righteousness in my offspring. I truly repent to You, and I truly submit (to Your Will).’
(Surah An-Naml, verse 19)
Through this dua, we can ask Allah to make us and our fathers among those who are grateful for His favours. What better gift can we offer our dads than the blessing of this dua?

5. Dua for Sick Father
Without a doubt, no child can imagine his/her father sick. We all want our fathers to live a healthy and long life. When it comes to the father, he is not just the breadwinner but also the leader and the foundation of a home. And when he gets ill, our world feels like it is collapsing. In such a situation, the best we can do is to pray for them with all our hearts.
Aisha (RA) narrated that whenever Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) paid a visit to a patient or a patient was brought to him, he used to invoke Allah, saying,
Adhhib al-bāsa, Rabba al-nāsi, ishfi wa anta al-Shāfi, lā shifā’a illā shifā’uka, shifā’an lā yughādiru saqaman.
‘Take away the disease, O the Lord of the people! Cure him as You are the One Who cures. There is no cure but Yours, a cure that leaves no disease.’
(Sahih al Bukhari 5675)
Read this dua for your father if he is ill. Ask Allah to grant Him good health. May Allah keep our parents safe and sound, Amin!
Tip: Black cumin is known for its healing properties and is mentioned in the Sunnah as a remedy for all diseases except death. You can take five or seven seeds, crush them, mix the powder with oil, and place a few drops in both nostrils. This can help support recovery.

6. Dua for Father Who Passed Away
In Surah Imran, we read that every soul will taste death. Death is an inevitable reality that each one of us will face one day, but losing one’s parents is unbearable, and nothing can compensate for that loss. At that time, it feels like you are left alone in this world, and every other relationship seems meaningless.
When we’re kids, we often dream about growing up and doing something amazing to make our fathers proud. We imagine all the things we’ll achieve and how happy they’ll be because of us. But sadly, not all of us get the chance to share those proud moments with our fathers, who worked so hard, day and night, to help us reach our dreams.
In that case, Allah, who is the Most Merciful and All-Knowing, has given us a way to still help our Muslim dads, even after they’ve passed away. That way is through dua. Making dua for deceased fathers is one of the most beautiful and meaningful things we as children can do for them.
You can recite the following dua for your father who has passed away,
‘O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and give him strength and pardon him. Be generous to him, and cause his entrance to be wide, and wash him with water and snow and hail. Cleanse him of his transgressions as white cloth is cleansed of stains. Give him an abode better than his home, and a family better than his family, and a wife/husband better than his wife/husband. Take him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave [and from the punishment of Hell-fire].’
(Muslim, 156)
Conclusion
After Allah Almighty and His Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), our parents have the greatest rights over us. In many places in the Quran, Allah commands us to be dutiful and good to our parents.
‘For your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And honour your parents…rather, address them respectfully.’
(Surah Al-Isra, verse 23)
Spend as much time as possible with your fathers and mothers. Make them happy with you. Disobeying them is considered a sin, so never hurt them through your words or actions. Be nice to them while they’re around. Remember them in your prayers, as this is one of the best things you can do for them.
