Did you know the Prophet (PBUH) used to strive hard (in worship) during the last ten days of Ramadan in a way that he did not strive at any other times? Among the odd nights of last Ashra comes the most blessed night known as ‘Laylat al Qadr.’ It is an Arabic word that means the ‘Night of Power’ or the ‘Night of Decree’.

What makes Laylatul Qadr so exceptional and special? Let’s uncover the virtues and blessings of the most blessed night throughout the year.

      When is Laylatul Qadr?

The exact date of Laylatul Qadr has always been unknown, but it is certain to occur within the last ten nights of Ramadan, with many believing it falls on one of the odd nights. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said,

"Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.”

      (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017)

Many scholars believe that this secrecy is a blessing, motivating believers to increase their prayers, recitation of the Quran, and acts of kindness throughout the last ten nights.

The Virtues of Laylat al Qadr

Below are given the virtues of Laylatul Qadr, and the reasons why this night is so blessed and holds great importance in Islam:

      1. Revelation of the Quran on the Night of Qadr

The Holy Book Quran and Tasbeeh

It was the night when the Quran was sent down to mankind. It has been proved from various verses of the holy book. The night is so significant that an entire Surah (chapter) is named after the night of Qadr in the Quran.

In Surah Al-Qadr, Allah says in the first verse,

“Indeed, (it is) We Who sent this (Quran) down on the Night of Decree.”

      (Surah Al-Qadr, Verse 1)

The Quran was revealed in two stages. First, it was brought down in its complete form from Lauh Mahfuz (The Preserved Tablet) to Baitul ‘Izzah (The Lowest Heaven). Then, over 23 years, it was sent gradually to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as guidance for people. (Tafseer Ibn Khateer)

      2. The Night Better than a Thousand Months

One of the biggest virtues of Laylatul Qadr is that this night is better than a thousand months. Allah describes it as being a blessed night in the Quran. He says,

“The Night of Glory (Laylatul Qadr) is better than a thousand months.”

      (Surah Al-Qadr, verse 3)

This verse implies that the rewards of this night are beyond imagination - every act of worship is counted as if performed for at least 83 years, the span of an entire lifetime. This encourages Muslims to spend this night in prayer and seek Allah’s pleasure through worship.

Tip: Make the most of this night with essentials that support your worship. A soft prayer mat for comfort. A beautiful Quran for reflection. A Tasbeeh to keep track of dhikr. Prepare now and focus fully on your prayers. Explore here.

      3. It is the Night When Angels Come Down on Earth

On this special night, countless angels and the Spirit (Al-Rooh) descend to the earth. This happens because the night is filled with Allah’s blessings and mercy. Angels always come down when Allah’s kindness is sent, just like they do when the Quran is recited. It is mentioned in the Quran:

“That night the angels and the Holy Spirit descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every decreed matter.”

      (Surah Al-Qadr, verse 4)

The angels surround the circles of dhikr (gathering where Allah is remembered). In this verse, the Spirit (Al-Rooh) refers to Jibreel (peace be upon him), who is mentioned separately as a sign of honour and respect. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 4/531)

      4. Forgiveness of all Previous Sins

One of the greatest blessings of Laylatul Qadr is the chance to have all past sins forgiven. This night is a priceless opportunity for believers to seek Allah’s mercy with sincerity and devotion.

According to a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA), the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.”

      (Sahih Al-Bukhari 2014)

This hadith indicates Allah's incredible mercy. No matter how many mistakes a person has made, Laylatul Qadr offers a fresh start.

      5. The Acceptance of Duas

Laylatul Qadr is a night when prayers are readily accepted. It is a time to turn to Allah with sincerity, ask for His mercy, and seek forgiveness for past mistakes. The Prophet (PBUH) taught us to take full advantage of this blessed night by making heartfelt duas, as Allah’s mercy and blessings are abundant.

Dua For Laylatul Qadr (From Sunnah)

It was narrated that Aishah (RA) asked the Prophet (PBUH), “O Messenger of Allah! If I know which night Laylatul Qadr is, what should I say in it?” And he replied:

      اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ كَرِيمٌ تُحِبُّ العَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Allāhumma Innaka 'Afuwwun Karīmun Tuhibbu-l 'Afwa Fa'fu 'Annī
"Oh Allah, You are indeed Forgiving, Generous and love to forgive, so forgive me."

      (Sunan Ibn Majah 3850)

It is the night on which Allah determines the fate of all His creation for the coming year. Every event - life and death, provision and hardship, success and failure - is written on this blessed night. Allah mentions in the Quran:

“On that night (Laylatul Qadr) every matter of wisdom is ordained.”

      (Surah Ad-Dukhan, verse 4)

This means that on Laylatul Qadr, the destiny of every individual is set, including who will live and who will pass away, who will receive blessings, and who will face challenges. This night is a reminder that everything happens by Allah’s divine will and wisdom.

Use this night to sincerely make dua, ask for forgiveness, and seek Allah’s mercy, as He alone has control over what is written for us.

Bonus Tip: Practise I’tikaf in the Last Ten Days of Ramadan

I’tikaaf holds a special virtue on this blessed night, making it more rewarding than on any other night of the year. It is a time of complete devotion, where one stays in the mosque to focus solely on worship and seeks closeness to Allah.

It was reported from Aisha (RA) that our beloved Prophet (PBUH) used to practise I’tikaaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. (Sahih Al-Bukhari 2020). This special practice helps believers step away from daily distractions and focus completely on worship during these blessed nights.
