Maqam Ibrahim is a place located near Mataf (the semi-circular area around Kaaba) where it is believed that Prophet Ibrahim (AS) stood and constructed Kaaba with the help of his son Ismail (AS).
Today the place is marked by a blackish-red stone which is placed in a gold and silver frame and kept in a glass case. It contains the footprints of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). The cage has a curtain embroidered with ornaments called Sitara.
Let's discuss Maqam Ibrahim’s history in detail, its religious importance, and some interesting facts about it.

History of Maqam Ibrahim
The Maqam Ibrahim stone is located 14 metres from the Kaaba and contains the footprints of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). There are a number of traditions surrounding the history of Maqam Ibrahim, one of which is the story that while the Holy Kaaba was being constructed, the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) supervised its construction while standing on the stone. Despite the stone's hardness, thanks to Allah's (SWT) grace, it softened and imprints of the Prophet's feet were carved into it.
According to another widely accepted story, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) lifted his son Prophet Ismail (AS) on his shoulders while standing on the stone when he was building Kaaba.
Allah (SWT) commanded Prophet Ibrahim (AS) after he had finished building the Kaaba, to proclaim to mankind for pilgrimage. Thus, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) stood on Maqam Ibrahim and called on pilgrims to make the holy pilgrimage to Makkah. The Quran mentions it like this:
“And proclaim to the people the Hajj (pilgrimage); they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass.”
(Surah Al-Hajj verse 27)
Religious Importance of Maqam Ibrahim
Maqam Ibrahim holds great significance in Islam, serving as a symbol of Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) unwavering faith and dedication to Allah (SWT). It serves as a reminder of the deep connection between the Prophet Ibrahim and the Kaaba, a site deeply revered by Muslims. In the Holy Quran, Allah (SWT) highlights the importance of Maqam Ibrahim as follows:
“In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Ibrahim. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever can find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.”
(Surah Al-Imran verse 97)
All pilgrims are required to offer two rakats of salah after completing Tawaf (seven rounds around Kaaba by the Maqam of Ibrahim).
The maqam Ibrahim is also associated with the hardships and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS). When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was building the Kaaba with the help of Prophet Ismail (AS), he needed a place to stand to reach the higher parts of the structure. Allah (SWT) provided a stone, which became known as Maqam Ibrahim. As Prophet Ibrahim (AS) stood on this stone, it miraculously rose and lowered, allowing him to complete the construction.
The effort and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS) during the building of the Kaaba symbolise their unwavering faith and obedience to Allah (SWT). Every pilgrim who visits Makkah for Hajj or Umrah should pay their respects to this historical artefact.
Maqam Ibrahim measures 40 cm by 40 cm in length and width, and 20 cm in height. The stone has a yellowish and reddish-white colour. The depth of one footprint on this stone is 10 cm, and the depth of the second is 9 cm.
The stone inside the casing is square shaped and is placed over 20 cm of marble inside the dome casing. Currently, the footprints' length has decreased to 27 cm from 22 cm, while their width has decreased to 11 cm from 14 cm.
The dome of the stone was first constructed in 810 Hijri, and it has been rebuilt several times since then. Maqam Ibrahim used to have a room, now it is encased in a gold case.
