The sunnah acts you should perform during Eid include the following:
The night before Eid, known as Laylat al-Jaiza or the Night of Rewards, holds special significance in Islam. Engaging in voluntary prayers and acts of worship during this time is believed to bring abundant blessings and spiritual benefits.
It was narrated by Abu Umamah that the Prophet (PBUH) said,
“Whoever spends the nights of the two Eid in praying voluntary prayers, seeking reward from Allah, his heart will not die on the Day when hearts will die.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah 1782)
It is recommended to recite Takbir on the night of Eid, starting from sunset on the last day of Ramadan until the Imam arrives to lead the prayer. Here’s the Takbeer for Eid:
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ وَاَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْد
Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha ill-Allah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa Lillahi’l-hamd
Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, there is none worthy of worship except Allah, Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, and all praise be to Allah.
As Muslims, cleanliness is a fundamental aspect of our faith. Taking a full-body bath on the morning of Eid is a recommended practice. This act of cleanliness prepares you physically and spiritually for the day's festivities and communal prayers.
It was narrated that Ibn Abbas (RA) said,
“The Prophet (PBUH) used to have a bath on the day of Fitr and the day of Adha.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah 1315)
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions would customarily wear their best clothes on the two Eids. Nafi reported that Abdullah Ibn Umar (RA) would wear his best clothes on the days of two Eids (al-Sunan al-Kubrá lil-Bayhaqī 6143).
In many cultures, Muslims buy new clothes to celebrate and spread joy on this special occasion. Do you want to try something classical and traditional this Eid? If yes, then, thobes, whether Arabic or Moroccan, are second to none. Check out this amazing collection by Riwaya sellers!
Applying attar, or fragrance, is a cherished Sunnah in Islam, highlighting the importance of cleanliness and personal hygiene. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) loved pleasant scents and often wore perfume, especially during special occasions like Eid.
Following this practice by wearing an attar on Eid can enhance the joy and significance of the celebration. Aisha (RA) said,
“She used to perfume the Prophet (PBUH) with the sweetest perfume she could find till she saw the perfume shining on his head and beard.”
(Mishkat al-Masabih 4435)

On Eid ul-Fitr, it is Sunnah to eat dates before the prayer to mark the end of fasting. The Prophet (PBUH) would not leave for the Eid prayer without first eating an odd number of dates. Following this practice is a simple yet meaningful way to honour His example.
Anas bin Malik (RA) narrated:
“Allah's Messenger (PBUH) never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of Eid-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. He used to eat an odd number of dates.”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari 923)

Zakat al Fitr is an obligatory charity given to the poor before the Eid prayer. It serves as a gesture of gratitude for the completion of Ramadan and a commitment to supporting the community.
You must remember to pay Zakat al Fitr before offering the Eid prayer. It is compulsory for all members of your family, even including your children and elderly people. It cannot be made up if neglected without any valid excuse.
Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated,
“The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) enjoined Zakat-ul-Fitr on the one who fasts (i.e. fasted during the month of Ramadan) to purify him from any indecent act or speech and to provide food for the needy.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah 1827)
On Eid day, it's a Sunnah to take one route to the prayer and a different route back. Both the paths you take to the prayer will testify on the day of judgment that you attended this prayer.
Jabir Bin Abdullah (RA) narrated,
“On the Day of Eid, the Prophet (PBUH) used to return (after offering the Eid prayer) through a way different from that by which he went.”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari 986)
Eid Salah is a special prayer that brings the Muslim community together in gratitude and joy. It is performed in large gatherings, often in Mosques, to celebrate the blessings of Ramadan. This prayer reminds us of the importance of unity, thankfulness, and seeking Allah’s guidance.
Abdullah bin Umar narrated,
“Allah's Messenger (PBUH) used to offer the prayer of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha and then deliver the Khutba after the prayer.”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari 957)
On the day of Eid, Muslims often greet each other with words like ‘Eid Mubarak’ or ‘Happy Eid’. However, there’s a better way to greet each other on this special day: following the practice of Sahabas (companions of the Prophet (PBUH).
Zubair ibn Nufayr reported that the companions of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) when they met each other on the day of Eid, they would say to each other, “May Allah accept good deeds from us and from you.” ( Ṣalat al-ldayn lil-Maḥāmilī 2/218)
Giving gifts during Eid is a way to express love and joy. This tradition fosters goodwill and strengthens relationships among family and friends. The Prophet (PBUH) encouraged this practice to increase mutual affection.
The Prophet (PBUH) said,
“Give presents to one another for this would increase your mutual love.”
(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 594)
