Life isn’t always easy. We all go through ups and downs - fear, loss, illness, anxiety… the list goes on. Behind every smiling face, there is an untold story of hardships. However, in Islam, we are gifted with one spiritual resource that is Sabr (patience). As Muslims, we are taught to bear patience whenever things get tough. But let’s be honest, sometimes it becomes difficult to practise patience during tough times.
So, what can we do about this? How can we ask Allah to help us bear patience when facing hard times? In this blog, we will help you discover powerful duas (supplications) for patience you can read to seek Allah’s help in times of hardships.
What Is Sabr?
If you translate Sabr to English, it generally means patience. However, Sabr in Islam is so much more than that. Sabr is when you hold on to your Deen (religion), it is when you trust Allah’s plan, no matter the situation. It is when you guard yourself against sins. It is when you hold on to your love to Allah whenever you face pain. It is showing obedience to Allah when afflictions fall upon you.
Sabr is a huge blessing that we must cherish and remind ourselves that Allah is with the patient (2:153). In the Quran, patience is praised as one of the greatest virtues. It teaches us that every hardship comes with ease, and by being patient, we can earn Allah’s rewards and blessings.
It is mentioned in the Quran,
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155)
What The Quran Says About Patience
The Quran places great importance on Sabr (patience). Many Quranic verses encourage us to remain patient and steadfast during tough times. These verses remind us that Allah loves those who show patience, and He promises many rewards for them in both this world and the Hereafter.
Allah Says in the Quran,
“It is they who will be rewarded with (elevated) mansions (in Paradise) for their patience, and will be received with salutations and (greetings of) peace.”
(Surah Al-Furqan, verse 75)

What The Prophet (PBUH) Said About Patience
Our Prophet (PBUH) faced severe challenges throughout his life. He lost many of his loved ones. He was an orphan when he was born and lost his mother at a very young age. He even lost his spouse and children, yet he remained patient. Throughout his journey of prophethood, his own people insulted him, calling him a magician and a madman, forced him to migrate and some even plotted to kill him. Despite all this, he kept on teaching people about Islam.

We can learn from the example of the Prophet (PBUH) and his remarkable practice of Sabr (patience). His example teaches us how to respond to our own difficulties with patience and resilience. There are many Hadiths that highlight the importance and beauty of patience in Islam. One of them states:
“… and he who remains patient, Allah will bestow patience upon him, and he who is satisfied with what he has, Allah will make him self-sufficient. And there is no gift better and vast (you may be given) than patience.”
(Sahih Bukhari, 6470)
