Do you know seeking knowledge can be your way to Jannah (paradise)? Islamic teachings place great importance on the pursuit and spread of knowledge. It is considered one of the most honourable and virtuous acts in Islam. Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said,

‘Whoever takes a path upon which to obtain knowledge, Allah makes the path to Paradise easy for him.’

      (Jami At Tirmidhi 2646)

If you want to have an impact on the world, you need to learn and acquire knowledge. One way to ask Allah to increase your knowledge is through duas. That's why, in this blog, we’ll share six powerful duas adapted from the Quran and Hadith to increase knowledge.

      Knowledge and the First Revelation

In Islam, acquiring knowledge is a way of improving understanding of faith and its practices. The very first revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was about knowledge and learning:

‘Read, (O Prophet), in the Name of your Lord Who created—created humans from a clinging clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, Who taught by the pen—taught humanity what they knew not.’

      (Surah Al-Alaq, verse 1-5)

The Qur’an started with the word Iqra, meaning ‘read,’ and highlights the value of learning and understanding in Islam. Allah reminds people that He has given them the ability to acquire knowledge, a gift that sets humans apart.

Learning not only improves understanding of faith but also brings individuals closer to Allah. Reading the Quran, exploring the world, and seeking knowledge are encouraged to become better Muslims and better people.

The Best Six Duas for Increase in Knowledge

      Hands raised for dua

Here is the list of six powerful duas for increasing knowledge from the Quran and Hadith that you can recite to seek Allah’s help in gaining beneficial knowledge:

      1. Dua for Increase in Knowledge

This beautiful dua was taught by Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to ask for more knowledge. It shows how important learning is in Islam. Allah revealed this verse when the Prophet (PBUH) was receiving the Quran, and He advised not to rush the recitation, as understanding and learning are more valuable than speed.

      Rabbi zidni ilma
‘My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.’

      (Surah Taha, verse 114)

This dua shows that seeking knowledge is a continuous journey, and Allah is the ultimate source of all knowledge. By reciting this dua, Muslims acknowledge their reliance on Allah for wisdom and understanding.

      2. Dua for Wisdom

This powerful dua was made by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) as he prayed to Allah for guidance and success. It reflects his humility and desire to live a righteous life and be remembered for doing good.

The dua asks Allah for wisdom, the company of righteous people, an honourable legacy, and the ultimate reward of Paradise:

      رَبِّ هَبْ لِى حُكْمًۭا وَأَلْحِقْنِى بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ . وَٱجْعَل لِّى لِسَانَ صِدْقٍۢ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ . وَٱجْعَلْنِى مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
Rabbi hab li huk'man wa alhiq'ni bissaliheen. Waj'al li lisana sidqin fil-akhireen. Waj'alni min warathati jannatin-naeem
‘My Lord! Grant me wisdom, and join me with the righteous. Bless me with honourable mention among later generations. Make me one of those awarded the Garden of Bliss.’

      (Surah Ash Shu’ara, verses 83-85)

This dua encourages Muslims to seek wisdom and good character, strive for meaningful achievements, and remain focused on the ultimate goal: Jannah (Paradise). It teaches the importance of living a life that benefits both the present and future generations.

      3. Dua for Knowledge and Provision

Umm Salamah (RA), the wife of the Prophet (PBUH), narrated that after the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) finished praying fajr salah (morning prayer) and said the Salam (to conclude the prayer), he would recite this supplication:

      اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً
Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman naafi’an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan
‘O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision and acceptable deeds.’

      (Sunan Ibn Majah 925)

This supplication shows the Prophet's (PBUH) habit of starting the day with a heartfelt plea for knowledge, provision, and deeds that would earn Allah’s acceptance. It teaches everyone the importance of beginning the day by relying on Allah and seeking His blessings for a productive and virtuous life.

      4. Dua for Seeking Beneficial Knowledge

Not all knowledge is equal; some things you learn may be harmful or lack any benefit. While seeking knowledge is important, it's equally crucial to be mindful of the information you absorb. Once something is deeply ingrained, it can be challenging to unlearn.

Therefore, it is essential to pray for beneficial knowledge and avoid pursuing knowledge that holds no value or may lead to harm. Anas (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to say the following supplication:

      اَللَّهُمَّ اِنْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي, وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي, وَارْزُقْنِي عِلْمًا يَنْفَعُنِي
Allahumma infa’ni bima ‘allamtani, wa ‘allimni ma yanfa’uni, warzuqni ‘ilman yanfa’uni
‘O Allah! Grant me benefit in what you have taught me, and teach me useful knowledge and provide me with knowledge that will benefit me.’

      (Book 16, Hadith no. 130)

This dua teaches the importance of not only acquiring knowledge but also seeking knowledge that is beneficial and leads to positive change in life. It reflects the Islamic principle of lifelong learning and putting knowledge into action for personal and societal betterment.

      5. Dua of Prophet Musa (AS)

Prophet Musa (AS) made this dua when Allah commanded him to deliver His message to Pharaoh, a task of immense challenge and responsibility. Prophet Musa (AS) asked Allah to give him clarity, courage, and ease in his mission, particularly in speaking effectively so people could understand his words.

Rabbi ishrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wa hlul ‘uqdatam min lisani, yafqahu qawli
‘My Lord, expand for me my chest, and ease for me my task, and untie the knot from my tongue that they may understand my speech.’

      (Surah Taha, verses 25-28)

This dua is a powerful reminder for anyone facing challenges, especially when delivering a message, presenting an idea, or engaging in conversations. Whether it’s a public speech, an important conversation, or a daunting responsibility, this dua can be a source of strength and reassurance.

If you're a student concerned about your studies and exam success, make sure to memorise duas for exam success, inspired by the Quran and Hadith.

      6. Dua for Knowledge and Success

The Prophet (PBUH) often made this comprehensive dua that encompasses every aspect of life - spiritual, worldly, and eternal. It is a request for goodness in this world, excellence in the Hereafter, and protection from the torment of Hellfire.

Rabbana atina fi dunya hasanatan wa fi al-akhirati hasanatan wa qina azab an-nar
‘O our Lord give us good in this Dunyaa, and good in the Hereafter and save us from the punishment of the fire.’

      (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The ‘al-Hasanah (good)’ in this world refers to everything beneficial, such as health, wealth, knowledge, righteous actions, and fulfilling relationships. By incorporating this supplication into your daily prayers, you can ask Allah Almighty for beneficial knowledge and paradise in the Hereafter.

Seeking Knowledge: Combining Dua with Action

While making dua for an increase in knowledge is a powerful and essential step, it must be paired with effort and action to achieve meaningful results. Islam emphasizes both relying on Allah through supplication and striving through practical efforts.

Merely asking for knowledge without actively seeking it would contradict the principles of dedication and hard work encouraged in Islam. The Quran highlights the importance of action alongside faith, as Allah says:

'And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives.'

      (Surah An-Najm, verse 39)

      Practical Steps to Seek Knowledge

      a. Develop a Learning Plan: Clearly outline what knowledge you want to gain, whether it’s religious, academic, or professional.

      b. Take Consistent Action: Attending classes, reading relevant books, and seeking guidance from knowledgeable individuals are key to deepening understanding. Dedicating time each day to learning and reflection ensures consistent progress. These efforts, alongside dua, make the pursuit of knowledge more effective and meaningful.

      c. Combine Dua with Effort: Alongside saying dua, make a conscious effort to act on this dua by taking steps toward acquiring knowledge.

      d. Reflect and Apply: Apply the knowledge gained in daily life, as practical implementation reinforces learning and brings blessings.

      Conclusion

In conclusion, seeking knowledge is essential in Islam, as it is one of the most virtuous acts. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,

‘He who goes forth in search of knowledge is considered as struggling in the Cause of Allah until he returns.’

      (Riyad as-Salihin 1385)

Therefore, whether you're a student or a scholar, the duas shared in this blog can help you ask Allah for an increase in knowledge and understanding. By regularly making these supplications, one can seek beneficial knowledge and guidance. May Allah grant us knowledge that leads to success in this life and the Hereafter! Ameen.
