Travel is considered a good deed in Islam when it is undertaken with the right intentions. Travelling and exploration by past Muslims is a key factor that contributed to Islam's growth throughout the world today. Moreover, travelling increases our faith in Allah (SWT), as Quran states:
"Say (O Muhammad): ‘Travel throughout the land and see how He originated the creation, then Allah will bring it into being one more time. Surely Allah is Most Capable of everything"
(Surah Al-Ankabut 29:20)
Before starting a journey, whether we are travelling by car, train, or aeroplane, we must recite certain Duas to remember Allah (SWT) and seek his blessings. Even though we plan ahead and arrange everything for our trip, we never know if something bad might happen. As Muslims, we must seek the guidance of Allah (SWT) in reaching our destination in a safe and sound manner.
To help you prepare for that here are some certain duas and supplications to recite when going on a travel journey.
Travelling means going from one place to another for visiting purposes or as an immigrant to seek knowledge and earn a livelihood. It is stated in the Quran that this world is temporary and humans are constantly in a state of travel. Allah (SWT) also mentions physical travel on several occasions.
'Sayyir' in the Quran refers to a traveller. A literal translation of the word sayir would be to move or travel. The Quran uses this word 27 times, including in the phrases "Tell them to travel," "Do they not travel," and "Do they travel." Meaning, Allah (SWT) asks us to travel around the world to seek knowledge and see what other wonders does the planet hold.
“Do they then not travel through the Earth, so that their minds gain wisdom and their ears thus learn to hear?”
(Surah Hajj 22:46)
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) also stressed the importance of travel. The Prophet recommended that believers travel as a means of gaining experience and acquiring knowledge. As an example, he stated:
“Keep to travelling by night because the earth is folded (traversed more easily) during the night.”
(Abu Dawud)
Travel in Islam serves many purposes, such as performing Hajj & Umrah, learning about different cultures and societies, and appreciating Allah's creation around the world.

Also while one is exempted from fasting prayers (namaz) are shortened for them. Check out this detailed guide for more information.
Prior to travelling, the Shariah recommends that two rakats of nawafil be performed. This was done by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) before he set out on any journey. The following hadith confirms this practice:
إذا خرجتَ من منزِلِك فصلِّ ركعتينِ تمنعانِكَ مخرجَ السُّوءِ و إذا دخلْتَ إلى منزِلِك فصلِّ ركعتينِ تمنعانِكَ مدْخلَ السُّوءِ
ại̹dẖā kẖarãj̊ta min̊ man̊zilika faṣalĩ rak̊ʿataẙni tam̊naʿānĩka mukẖ̊rija ạlsũwʾi wa ại̹dẖā dakẖal̊ta ại̹lay̱ man̊zilika faṣalĩ rak̊ʿataẙni tam̊naʿānĩka mad̊kẖala ạlsũwʾi
“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil.”
(Musnad Al-Bazzar 8567)
This Sunnah is also known as travel prayers in Islam.
At any point during your journey, you can recite the following Dua for Travel as narrated by the Prophet (PBUH):
من قالَ يَعني إذا خرجَ من بيتِهِ: بِسمِ اللَّهِ، توَكَّلتُ على اللَّهِ، لا حَولَ ولا قوَّةَ إلَّا باللَّهِ، يقالُ لَهُ: كُفيتَ، ووُقيتَ، وتنحَّى عنهُ الشَّيطانُ
man̊ qāla yaʿ̊nī ại̹dẖā kẖarãja min̊ baẙtihi: bisamĩ ạllhi , tawakãl̊tu ʿalay̱ ạllhi , lā ḥaẘla walā qūãẗa ại̹lãạ bạllãhi , yuqālu lahu: kufīta , wawuqīta , watun̊ḥay̱ ʿan̊hu ạlsẖãẙṭānu
"Whoever says (upon leaving his house): “In the Name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no might or power except by Allah”,'it will be said to him: 'You have been sufficed and protected, and the devil will go far away from him".
(Sunan Abi Dawud 5095)
It is recommended to make this Dua when going for any form of travel, whether it be a short trip, a long trip by foot, by vehicle, by plane, or even by camel, as recommended by Our Prophet (PBUH) saying:
سُبْحَانَ الذي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هذا، وَما كُنَّا له مُقْرِنِينَ، وإنَّا إلى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ
sub̊ḥāna ạlãdẖī sakẖãra lanā hadẖā , wamā kunãạ lahu muq̊rinīna , wāi̹nãạ ại̹lay̱ rabĩnā lamun̊qalibūna
“In the name of Allah and all praise is for Allah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny.”
(Abu Dawud 3/34, At-Tirmidhi 5/501)
Suhaib (RA) reported that when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) looked at a new city or town which he would enter soon after a journey, he recited the following verse:
ạllãhumũ rabĩ ạls̃mwāti ạlsãb̊ʿi wamā ạảẓ̊lal̊na , warabã ạlạảrāḍīna ạlsãb̊ʿi wamā ạ̉q̊̊lal̊na , warabã ạlsẖãyāṭīni wamā ạảḍ̊lal̊na , warabã ạlrĩyāḥi wamā dẖaraẙna , ạảs̊ạảluka kẖaẙra hadẖihi ạl̊qar̊yaẗi wakẖaẙra ạ̉h̊lihā , wakẖaẙra mā fīhā , wāảʿūdẖu bika min̊ sẖarĩhā wasẖarĩ ạ̉h̊lihā , wasẖaruⁿ̃ mā fīhā
“O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelop, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, Lord of the winds and all whom they whisk away. I ask You for the goodness of this village, the goodness of its inhabitants, and for all the goodness found within it, and I take refuge with You from the evil of this village, the evil of its inhabitants, and from all the evil found within it.”
(Al-Hakim, Ibn As-Sunni (Hadith no. 524)
While travelling to another city to celebrate Eid, weddings, or vacations with loved ones we must remember Allah (SWT) and seek protection from any harm that we may experience. Recite the following dua as narrated by The Prophet(PBUH):
أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من شر ما خلق، لم يضره شيء، حتى يرتحل من منزله ذلك
" ạảʿūdẖu bikalimāti ạllhi ạltãạmãạti min̊ sẖarĩ mā kẖalaqa " lam̊ yaḍurũhu sẖaaẙ̱ʾuⁿ ḥatãy̱ yar̊taḥila min̊ man̊zilihi dẖalika
"I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what is created, nothing would harm him until he makes his leave from that place.”
(Sahih Muslim)

When we return home after a long trip, we must show our gratitude to Allah (SWT) and thank him for the safe travel we just had. Remember to recite 2 rakat of prayer after returning as we have highlighted previously.
Further, Anas ibn Malik reported while returning to Madinah with the Holy Prophet (PBUG) after a journey he recited the following dua:
آيبون، تائبون ، عابدون ، لربنا حامدون
“ ậyibūna , tāyỉbūna , ʿābidūna , lirabãnā ḥāmidūna ”
“We return, repent, worship and praise our Lord”
(Riyad as-Salihin 987 (Book 7, Hadith 32))
You can recite this dua even during the trip if you face any difficulties or a mishap to seek Allah's (SWT) guidance and mercy.
We hope that these short Dua and recommended prayers can benefit you through your travel journey and remind you to be grateful for Allah's (SWT) blessings and see the beautiful wonders of this world created by the Almighty in a safe and sound manner.
