As a Muslim, you are probably familiar with Laylat al-Qadr, or the Night of Power. During Ramadan, this is one of the most significant nights in the Islamic calendar. It occurs during the last ten nights of Ramadan.
For Muslims, the importance of Laylatul Qadr cannot be overstated. The rewards and benefits of worship on this night are multiplied a thousandfold as mentioned in the Quran:
“The Night of decree (Laylatul Qadr)is better than a thousand months.”
(Surah Al-Qadr 97:3)
Every Muslim seeks Allah's (SWT) blessings and rewards on this night by praying Salat, reciting the Quran, making dua (supplications), and doing good deeds like helping another person.
Let's discuss the importance of this blessed night in more detail and what deeds you can do on this occasion to get maximum blessings.
The night of Laylat al-Qadr (also known as Laylatul Qadr) is one of the most important and sacred nights in the Islamic calendar. The general Laylat al Qadr meaning is the ‘Night of Power’ or the ‘Night of Decree’ and it offers many opportunities for endless rewards we can gain by the blessings of Allah (SWT).
The night of Laylat al-Qadr was also the night in which the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for the first time. Ramadan is therefore known as the month of the Quran. There is an entire chapter in the Quran (Surah Al-Qadr 97) devoted to this night:
“Indeed, We revealed [the Quran] during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn”
(Surah Al Qadr 97:1-5)
There is no mention of the specific signs of Laylatul Qadr and the night when it occurs. However, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“Search for Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.”
(Sahih Bukhari, 2017)
This means that Laylat al-Qadr might occur on any night of the 21st, 23rd, 25th,27th, and 29th of Ramadan. According to some narrations, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) once dreamed about Laylat al-Qadr, in which he prostrated and woke up with his face wet with rainwater and mud.
“Whoever has performed I`tikaf with me should continue it. I have been shown the Night of "Qadr", but have forgotten its date, but it is in the odd nights of the last ten nights. I saw in my dream that I was prostrating in mud and water”
(Sahih Bukhari 813)
This might indicate that there might be a possibility of rain on the night of Laylat al-Qadr.
Laylat al-Qadr offers an excellent opportunity to earn Allah's (SWT's) blessings and forgiveness. As Laylat al-Qadr carries a greater reward than a thousand months, it is the chance to perform deeds that will elevate one's status in the eyes of Allah (SWT).
This is one of the most blessed nights of the year. Those who spend this night socialising, arguing, or doing nothing miss out on a great deal.
The night officially begins at sunset right after Iftar time, so it is important to utilise the time wisely from that point on. On regular days you might sleep afterwards, go out with friends, or do routine work but instead on this night, you must start worshipping like praying Salah, reading the Quran, or doing supplications to increase your deeds in the eyes of Allah (SWT). As a result of doing that, you will be forgiven of all your past sins. As the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Whoever prays on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and sincerity, shall have all their past sins forgiven,”
(Sahih Bukhari, 1901)
One of the biggest benefits of Laylatul Qadr is that you have a chance to wipe away all your previous sins and mistakes. Make sincere dua from your heart about your sins or any bad deeds you have done and Allah (SWT) will surely listen to it. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) stated to Aisha (RA) about the night of Laylatul Qadr:
Aisha (RA) asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) what she should say if she realised Laylat al-Qadr. He (PBUH) replied: "You should supplicate: O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me."
(Jami`at-Tirmidhi, 3513)

Charity given on Laylat al-Qadr Night is highly rewarding in the eyes of Allah (SWT). The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said:
"The best charity is that given in Ramadan."
(Tirmidhi, 663)
So consider giving charity (Sadaqah) on this night to anyone who is in need. This can be poor people, your neighbour, or even charitable organisations who take your donation and deliver it to those in need. If you have not yet paid your Zakat, this Night is an excellent time to do so.
Remember charity does not mean giving money. In Islam even giving water or helping someone is considered an act of charity.
The Prophet (PBUH) also highlighted:
"The deeds most loved by Allah are those done regularly, even if they are small."
(Sahih Bukhari, 6464)
Since Laylat al-Qadr has such significance in Islam, believers are strongly encouraged to perform the recommended acts of worship. Here are some examples of righteous acts taken from the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) and his distinguished companions.
From Maghrib until dawn, refrain from backbiting, slander, and using foul language. Although Islam encourages us to avoid all this in our daily lives too, it is even more important to do so on the night of Al Qadr.
You must remember that the Night of Al Qadr begins at sunset when the fast is broken and the Maghrib prayer is offered. The right way to begin the night of Laylat al-Qadr is to make sincere supplications and perform the Salah of Maghrib on time.
Praying Isha and Fajr salah in the congregation on the Night of Power entitles you to the reward of worshipping Allah (SWT) throughout the night.
According to Hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) stated in this regard:
“Whoever prays Isha in a congregation, it is as if he has prayed for half the night. And whoever prays Fajr in congregation, it is as if he has prayed the entire night."
(Sahih Muslim, 656)
It is also a noble deed to pray Taraweeh in the mosque every last 10 nights during the month of Ramadan. As the Prophet (PBUH) stated in a hadith:
“Whoever prays qiyam with the imam until he finishes, Allah will write down for him the entire night in prayer
(Sunan an-Nasa'i, 1605)
This night is all about connecting with Allah (SWT) on a personal level, and there’s no better way to do that than through dua. There is no specific dua for Laylatul Qadr you can recite any supplication which helps you engage with Allah (SWT) and ask for anything you want in life, whether it is something personal, for your parents, family, friends or whole Muslim Ummah.
One of the most heartfelt supplications you can make is the one that was taught to Aisha (RA) by the Prophet (PBUH):
اللَّهمَّإنَّكعفُوٌّتُحبُّالعفوَفاعْفُعنِّي
“Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul-afwa, fa’fu anni.”
Oh Allah, you are the pardoner, you love to pardon, so pardon me
(Tirmidhi 3513)
You can also supplicate to Allah (SWT), in other words. Keep in mind the manners and sincerity of intention, as the dua made on this night has the highest chance of being answered.
